Thesis Proposal
The objective of this study is to provide an alternative design solution that can be recommended to the owner given that it can counter the shortfalls of the original design. Tthe project goals include designing a structure that is more durable, marketable, and conscious of sustainable issues. The focus will be directed towards the upper twenty-six stories of the building because any changes made will impact the overall design the most significantly.
Depth Study
The objective is to redesign the gravity and lateral systems of 360 State Street with a more traditional steel frame in place of staggered steel trusses. The floor system will remain as the hollow core precast planks. The design goals include increasing the strength amd rigidity of the structure, minimizing the floor depth by shortening span lengths, decreasing the overall building weight, and optimizing the foundations. |

Breadth Topics
Building Envelop Study: |
This section will investigate the functionality of the current façade design. Concurrently, an alternative design will be studied that will consist mainly of glass. The two façades will be compared in terms of marketability and thermal & structural performance. |
Construction Management Study: |
The structural redesign will impact the project significantly therefore, a cost and schedule analysis will be conducted to measure the viability of the alternate designs. Additionally, the alternate cost and schedule will be compared to the existing. The goal is to justify the use of staggered steel trusses as the best design solution for 360 State Street. |
